The Sensex opened with a huge positive gap of over 300 points at 15,264, and zoomed to a high of 15,423 in morning deals. Selling in noon deals saw the index drop to a low of 15,036 - an intra-day decline of 387 points. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 112 points (0.75%) at 15,073.
The BSE Auto index was up over 2%, and the Metal index declined over 3%. Market breadth was bearish - out of over 2,785 scrips traded, over 1,445 declined.
Maruti gained over 6% at Rs 653. Tata Motors added 4% at Rs 427. Bharti, ACC, TCS and BHEL moved up over 3% each. HDFC Bank was up nearly 3% at Rs 1,217. M&M, L&T, HUL, ICICI Bank and Satyam also closed with gains.
Tata Steel slipped 4% to Rs 646. SBI declined over 3% to Rs 1,524. Tata Power, Reliance Infra, HDFC, DLF and NTPC also declined.
The total turnover (BSE+NSE) was Rs 86,963 crore. BSE logged a turnover of Rs 7,186 crore. While NSE cash turover was Rs 18,596 crore, F&O turnover touched Rs 61,180 crore. RNRL was the most active counter on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 374 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 353 crore), Reliance (Rs 327 crore), L&T (Rs 289 crore) and ICICI Bank (Rs 206 crore).
