CLOSING TODAY

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 73 points at 15,577, and moved up to a high of 15,580 in early deals. Selling in heavyweights like ICICI Bank, SBI and L&T saw the index drop to a low of 15,125 in noon deals - an intra-day swing of 455 points. The Sensex finally closed with a loss of 292 points (1.88%) at 15,212.
The BSE Bankex and Metal index declined over 3%. All the other sectoral indices, except the FMCG and Oil & Gas indices, also declined. Market breadth was bearish - out of over 2,725 scrips traded, over 1,550 declined.
Tata Steel declined nearly 6% to Rs 608. Maruti dropped over 5% to Rs 678.
Jaiprakash, Sterlite, ICICI Bank and HDFC slipped over 4% each to Rs 188, Rs 597, Rs 738 and Rs 2,467, respectively.
Infosys dropped 4% to Rs 1,604. TCS, Wipro, Satyam, Tata Power, L&T, ONGC, SBI, Bharti and RCom also declined.
ITC was up 1% at Rs 195. Reliance was up marginally at Rs 2,342. Grasim, M&M and HUL also closed with gains.
Total market turnover (NSE+BSE) was Rs 72,230 crore. Reliance was the most active counter on the BSE with a turnover of Rs 296 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 252 crore), Infosys (Rs 186 crore), RNRL (Rs 176 crore) and L&T (Rs 166 crore).
